What Happens When a Water Softener is not used?

In the UK there are homes that would benefit from using a water softener as they are located in hard water areas. These homes have mains water supplied which has minerals such as calcium and magnesium dissolved in it, which makes the water hard. Hard water which is used in dishwashers, washing machines, kettles, showers and even taps can cause a build of a deposit called limescale. This limescale will adhere to surfaces and form a crust which thickens over time and can lead to a multitude of different problems within the home. However, there is a way to stop limescale formation from causing problems, and that is by using a water softener.
Here are a few of the problems that will occur when a water softener is not used:

  • Washing machine elements will get too hot and break down. Limescale will act like insulation which covers the element and this causes the element to work harder to heat the water in the washing machine. As it overheats it will cause the element to become damaged and break.
  • Dishwashers that use water that has not been treated with a water softener will not be able to wash dishes correctly. Limescale creates a film like substance over the items washed in it which means they will have to be washed again as they look dirty.
  • Shower heads will start to have a scale over them which will block the holes. Using the shower head can be difficult as the flow of water is not regular and even and unblocking it can be virtually impossible if left for too long.
  • Water pipes in a property will start to have limescale forming inside them. This can happen to both hot and cold water pipes, but hot water pipes suffer more as the heat encourages the limescale to form. As this gets worse pipes will not allow the same amount of water through them. This then affects the water supply within a property which can be very frustrating for anyone who is running the taps.
  • Energy bills will increase in hard water areas when a water softener is not used as more energy is needed to heat water which is flowing through limescale clogged pipes. Many people are not even aware that this happens and they simply put up with high energy bills.
  • When a person has a bath they will often feel as though they are not clean afterwards and as though they have a layer of film over them.
  • Limescale can form around taps and make them look untidy and messy. This can be removed, but it takes a lot of time and will soon build up again without a water softener.

All properties that are in a hard water area will have these problems occurring. Obviously, the best way to eliminate them is to invest in a water softener as this will reduce limescale build up in various places.
